a good, dynamic rhythm and a sense for detail in the music

The Sandum brothers Hans, born in 1980, and Øyvind, born in 1982, are from Lalm in Vågå township, and grew up in a home and a local community where folk music held a central position. Their parents are good dancers and folk musicians, and their mother, Ingebjørg, is particularly good at playing fiddle, with good kappleik placings from her youth. She comes from Garmo in Lom and is from a solid folk music family, so it is natural that Hans and Øyvind have a great deal of traditional music from the neighbouring district in addition to Lalm.

Their parents, as well as other members of their family, were therefore an important inspiration for the brothers. Both of them began playing when they were around 10 years old, and they have naturally played quite a bit together, including in competitions, where they have earned good placings. They have an active life in music behind them and have participated in several folk music and dance groups, in various gammaldans groups, and have other wise played a great deal for dance. This solid background and experience is made evident in a good, dynamic rhythm and a sense for detail in the music . They are faithful to the tradition, but have also composed tunes themselves.

HANS plays fiddle and has been an A-class fiddler since 2001. He has participated in many landskappleikar (Nor way’s annual national folk music competition) and smaller kappleikar, and as a member of Kolden & co he won Landsfestivalen i gammaldansmusikk in 2000.

ØYVIND plays accordion, both two-row diatonic and five-row chromatic button accordion. He has taken an education in folk music, studying first in the folk music program in Vinst ra and then at the Ole Bull Academy in Voss. He has played in various gammaldans groups, longest in the group Nordafjells, and has won landsfestivalen in ensemble playing. Not least, he has won the class for solo two-row button accordion many times, and in 2012 he won the royal trophy a t Landskappleiken in Ot ta. It is natural that he both has hi s own CD and has other wise contributed on many productions. In addition, it must be mentioned that he is also a good springleik dancer and has earned good placings at several kappleikar.
